  • KZN community Conservation areas (2016). The boundaries captured in this file represent the boundaries of the CCAs according to the best available data to date. This coverage has both the proclaimed and unknown proclamation status areas.

  • Freshwater Systematic Conservation Plan 2007. This is the freshwater planning unit surface for the 2007 Freshwater Systematic Conservation Plan (FSCP) run by Dr Nick Riversmore in 2007 using MARXAN. Within the attribute table, the field {status} highlights the status of the planning units relative to their conservation importance.

  • KZN Proclaimed Private Nature Reserves (2016)

  • Areas required for the persistence of specific species. Although these areas are frequently modified, a change in current land use, to anything other than rehabilitated land, would most likely result in a loss of that feature from the area identified.

  • Historical distribution of the vegetation types in KZN. Updates of this dataset completed in 2011.

  • This coverage represents an update of the vegetation map [kznveg05v210_wll] whose updates were completed on 4 September 2009. Several additions have been made which is represented in the Appendix 1 of the the KwaZulu – Natal Vegetation Type Description Document for Vegetation Map 2011. These additions were made based on data that was received in an effort to make the map more current and representative of KZN’s vegetation.

  • This was derived from the grid version of the KZN 2011 Land-cover Version 1 as produced by GeoTerraImage. This is a binary ArcView grid indicating areas transformed and untransformed (natural). The categories selected for modified/unmodified are listed in the “How the 2011 V1 LC was reclassified” text file.

  • The state protected areas in KZN are managed by various authorities eg Msinsi, DWA, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and DAFF. This dataset lists the proclaimed areas that are not managed by Ezemvelo. Please note these are not Ezemvelo managed protected areas and therefore the boundaries may differ from that developed by the respective management authority.

  • CBA areas considered critical for meeting biodiversity targets and thresholds, and which are required to ensure the persistence of viable populations of species and the functionality of ecosystems.
