  • Water treatment works where Blue or Green Drop measurement systems apply Information supplied by DWS; spatialized and corrected (placed) by CSIR BE. Indicates which technologies are used at each site.

  • Springs (DRDLR:NGI, 2006 and 2016). The springs data was extracted from the hydrological point shapefile data issued by the DRDLR-NGI in September 2015. Springs can indicate potential origins of seep wetlands or rivers, and were used by the data capturers to assess sources of wetlands. It also provides the location of inland aquatic features that were not assessed in the NBA 2018. Please see Van Deventer et al. (2018) for more information.

  • This data set is part of the National Wetland Map 2 (NWM2). Data from the National Wetlands Map 1 was combined with the 1:50 000 Farm dams features (DWAF 2004) to produce NWM2. National Wetland Map 2 that was divided into three GIS layers: wetland, natural waterbody and artificial waterbody.

  • The National Wetlands Map III (NWM3) is a combination of NWM2 extracted from the National Land Cover 2000 dataset and the Waterbodies of the 1:50 000 of topomaps from Chief Directorate Surveys and Mapping (CDSM). These two datasets were further categorized into natural waterbodies, artificial waterbodies and unclassified waterbodies. Although every effort was made to ensure the accuracy of the data, SANBI do not take responsibility for errors or problems that arise for using this dataset.

  • Artificial wetlands of the South African Inventory of Inland Aquatic Ecosystems (SAIIAE). This data set is part of the Inventory released with the launch of the NBA 2018. National Wetland Map 5 includes inland wetlands and estuaries, but are associated with river line data and many other data sets within the South African Inventory of Inland Aquatic Ecosystems (SAIIAE). Please ensure you obtain the full geodatabase and relevant reports to understand the appropriate use of the data. Appropriate use and a disclaimer is provided under the relevant reports below.

  • South African Ramsar wetland sites (polygons)

  • The 2018 South African Inventory of Inland Aquatic Ecosystems (SAIIAE) geodatabase is a collection of data layers pertaining to ecosystem types and pressures for both rivers and inland wetlands. These data layers were developed and used for the 2018 National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA 2018).

  • A sub-version of the National Wetland Map 5. National Geo-spatial Information (NGI) data from 2006 and 2016 was unioned into a single feature class. This was further unioined with the Estuaries Functional Zone, Working for Wetlands data, peatlands data, and the 1 m buffers of the NGI spring points (referred to as the ADD1 feature class). This layer was further split into provincial data sets for attending to slivers, checking names and assigning HGM units to a polygon. This layer should not be used as the final National Wetland Map 5. For the final National wetland map 5 please refer to the layer National Biodiversity Assessment 2018 Artificial Wetlands AEA.
