Landcover is categorized into 6 land cover types: Natural, Near Natural, Degraded, Cultivated and Transformed. The summarized land cover is the amalgamation of several land cover datasets: the finescale land cover recoded into 6 land cover types, National Land Cover 2000 also recoded to 6 land cover types, Lowlands Renosterveld Remnants layer and the Dept of Agriculture’s Field boundary layer. The Lowland remnants layer was used to add remnants to the NLC2000. Subsequently the fields layer was used to add any agricultural fields that were not found in NLC2000. Old fields from the fields layer became degraded in the summarized layer. Only one change was made to the original fine-scale land cover after recoding. Those areas where agricultural fields were mapped in the field layer, but not in the fine-scale land cover, were recoded to degraded (unless transformed) The fine-scale land cover and NLC2000 (with additions) were then merged into a single layer.
