Statement

The summarized land cover is the amalgamation of several land cover datasets: the fine-scale land cover recoded into 6 land cover types, National Land Cover 2000 also recoded to 6 land cover types, Lowlands Renosterveld Remnants layer and the Dept of Agriculture’s Field boundary layer.

The land cover classes in the summarized layer are as follows:

Value Land Cover Type

1 Natural/Pristine

2 Near Natural

3 Degraded

4 Cultivated

5 Transformed

6 Ocean

The Lowland Renosterveld Remnants layer was used to add remnants to the NLC2000. Subsequently the fields layer was used to add any agricultural fields that were not found in NLC2000. Old fields from the fields layer became degraded in the summarized layer of the NLC2000. The fine-scale land cover was left as is, except those areas where agricultural fields were mapped in the fields layer but not in the fine-scale land cover, were recoded to degraded. The fine-scale land cover and NLC2000 (with additions) were then merged into a single layer.
