River corridors represent important linkages across the landscape, particularly in arid and poorly differentiated habitats. In addition to the other river and aquatic features included in the plan, it was important to ensure that all major riparian corridor areas were included. The DWAF 1:500 000 rivers layer was used as the basis for the assessment. Rivers were buffered as follows:
3 rd order rivers - 1000m
2 nd order rivers – 500m
All remaining rivers – 250m
A 100% target for these rivers was set for the second run, ie. they were fully included in the Ecological Support Areas category.
