National Wetland Map1 Waterbodies Merge (NWM Beta Version)
Created from the NLC2000 dataset and the national Wetland Probability Map to create the first National Wetland Map (NWM1) Beta version

- Purpose
-
First national wetland inventory.
Mapping the locality of wetlands is essential so that they may be classified into the different wetland ecosystem types across the country, which in turn can be used along with other data to identify wetlands of significance.

The first National Wetland Map (NWM1) Beta Version or Map 1 layer was derived from the National Land Cover 2000 (NLC2000) GIS layer (Thompson et al. 2002; Van den Berg et al. 2008) in which wetland polygons are described as ‘Wetland’ or ‘Waterbody’ (Figure 3.1). NLC2000 was derived from multi-season Landsat imagery primarily of the year 2000 (GTI 2008). NWM1 was released in 2006 for public use and its polygons did not distinguish between natural or artificial water bodies but merely between water bodies and wetland categories, as derived from NLC2000.
The National Wetland Probability Map (NWPM) is defined as “illustrating the likely occurrence of modeled wetlands in a given locality, based on a combination of terrain characteristics and multi-season Landsat imagery, acquired primarily in 2000”.
