Statement

This layer was created by unioning other protected layers in this order: National Parks, Provincial Reserves, Marine Reserves, Local Authority Reserves, Mountain Catchment Areas, World Heritage Sites, Stewardship sites. Protected areas were ranked as follows:

Wilderness Areas = 1

SAN Park = 2

Provincial Reserve = 3

State Forest = 4

Marine Protected Area – National = 5

Marine Protected Area – Provincial = 6

Island Reserve = 7

World Heritage Site = 8

Contract Nature Reserve = 9

Local Authority Reserve = 10

Mountain Catchment Area = 11

Biodiversity Agreement = 12

Voluntary Conservation Agreement = 13.

Where there was overlap, the highest rank generally took precedence. Except that: All World Heritage Sites overlapped with another type of protected area so World Heritage Sites were therefore not included as a category. Mountain Catchment Areas also had a substantial degree of overlap with other protected areas and were subsequently removed from the layer, to be served separately. Slivers adjacent to protected areas were dealt with as follows: all harbours were deleted. Slivers of MPA where the difference was obviously a scale mismatch, the dataset with smallest scale (highest resolution) was used as a guide. Biodiversity agreements and voluntary conservation agreements are assumed to be mapped more accurately so when in doubt, these boundaries were used.

A new field called Type was created and to populate it based on rank, the following options were possible:

Wilderness area,

State Forest Reserve,

Provincial Reserve,

Provincial MPA,

National Park,

National MPA,

Local Authority Reserve,

Island Reserve,

Contract Nature Reserve,

Biodiversity agreement.

A new field called PAcategory was added describing the status of the protected area – Formal A= Wilderness area, State Forest Reserve, Provincial Reserve, Provincial MPA, National Park, National MPA, Island Reserve, Contract Nature Reserve,

Formal B = Local Authority Reserve

Informal = Biodiversity Agreements

A class detailing whether the protected area is terrestrial or marine was added and the area in ha (WGS84 UTM Zone 34S) for each polygon was calculated.

The data was clipped using the shapefile designated for municipalities and districts for the WCBF: (2_Geographic\Social_and_Cultural_Regions\Administrative\Municipalities_WesternCape\Local_Municipalities_2011.shp) with the Drakenstein and Stellenbosch shape being highlighted thus only the Drakenstein and Stellenbosch data is saved in this shapefile. The area calculations were updated after clipping.
