The vegetation map for the Klein Karoo (Vlok et al. 2005) was used as a basis. The minimum potential fire return period was assigned for each of the 56 habitat types present. This was based on the phytomass and structural characteristics of each habitat type. Non-flammability types were assigned a fire return interval of 100 + years while a highly flammable type, such as grassy fynbos, was assigned a 5 year fire return period.
