2014 Western Cape Landcover (Final_2014_WC_LC.tif)
This dataset represents the 2014 land cover for the Western Cape Province. It is a combination of the “wcape_lcov_2013-14_gti_utm35n_vs23f” land-cover product delivered by GeoTerraImage (30m resolution) and additional features identified to increase the detail in the final product; especially its representation of the built environment.
The original product was derived from multi-seasonal Landsat 8. The model derived landcover data is representative of the basic landscape characteristics, namely tree and bush cover, grassland (or low non-woody vegetation), barren areas (i.e. natural and man-made non-vegetated surfaces) and water. These spectrally-dependent classes were augmented by various geographic masks to derive a final thematic set of classes.
The additional spatial data added to the GTI land-cover product were as follows:
- Roads
- Railways
- Electrified Structures
- Dams
- Agricultural Fields
The final revised land-cover product consists of 122 different classes.

- Purpose
-
The purpose of this product, additional to the classification of land-cover types in the Western Cape, was to derive a summarized layer of natural and degraded areas for the Western Cape and to identify areas that were severely modified to completely transformed, for use in the province’s systematic biodiversity plan.

This layer is a combination of the following GIS datasets:
- wcape_lcov_2013-14_gti_utm35n_vs23f.img (GeoTerraImage) [original landcover]
- RSA_Rail_network.shp (PRASA) [railways]
- Prov_Rd_Net_Proc_Width.shp [roads]
- Dams-50_DWS_2014.shp [dams]
- SBC_2013_points.shp
- SBC_2013_polygons.shp [electrified structures; SPOT building count data]
- SA_Fields.shp [crop field boundaries; DAFF data, 2011, 2013 & 2014]
The original land cover was resampled from 30m to 10m. Each of the abovementioned layers were projected to the UTM34S projection system. Following this, each one was clipped to the extent of the Western Cape study area. The roads, rails and electrified structures were all buffered (roads and rails by 15m and structures by 10m) to replicate the relevant footprint. Each feature was then exported to raster format, classified to have a unique ID and erased from the 10m resampled GeoTerraImage product. After the erase, all raster features were mosaicked into the final raster land-cover product.
All documentation pertaining to the original GTI land cover product is centralized with CapeNature. The revised land cover product is discussed in the Western Cape’s 2016 Spatial Biodiversity Plan Technical Report.
