Landscape Corridors for the 2016 Biodiversity Sector Plans: Identifying corridors in KZN, creating linkages in a fragmented landscape

Purpose

The KZN Macro Ecological Corridor (Jewitt, 2009) developed in 2009 was based on 2005 land cover data and significant modification had

subsequently occurred within the landscape. During the compilation of district biodiversity sector plans these corridors were amended to take into account this modification of the landscape that had occurred post 2005. The modification to the landscape was identified using 2011

Landcover, 2011 Spot5 Satellite imagery and Google Earth imagery. Amendments to the corridor were based on the following criterion:

- Corridor width of between 100m and 1km were designated as critical linkages (pinch point).

- Corridor width less than 100m were considered to be non-viable for landscape corridors.

- Corridor widths of less than 1km, which had been reduced due to modification of the landscape, were increased to a maximum of 1km

where unmodified or old lands occurred next to the corridor.

- Alternative delineations for sections of corridors that have breaks or non-viable sections were investigated, and delineation width was

based on Freshwater SCA catchments.

- Secondary lands could be considered for use, in circumstances where the corridor is highly modified and the secondary lands would

protect the viability of the corridor.

- The sections of corridor that have no viable alternative delineations were removed from the landscape corridor.

Of the 19 corridors in the original coverage [kzncor05v3_1_10.wll] all had to be amended to varying degrees to take into account modification in the landscape and three corridors A further two new corridors were added, Ncandu at Chelmsford Nature Reserve and Ndumo/Tembe/ Isimangiliso Corridor along the border of South Africa and Mozambique.
