Dragonflies and Damselflies occurring in the African continent. It is a collection of data from citizen science contributions, museum collections, personal notebooks, published literature records, and other unpublished sources. Records range from 1762 to present. OdonataMAP is a Virtual Museum and citizen science project which aims to determine the distribution and conservation priorities of Odonata on the African continent. OdonataMAP is building the 21st century distribution maps for Africa's Odonata. It aims to serve as a repository of all existing distribution data for this group in the African continent. OdonataMAP also seeks to improve public awareness of the value and plight of this charismatic order of insects and to provide government agencies with a clear definition of conservation priorities that will help them to plan their activities. OdonataMAP build on the Odonata Database of Africa (ODA) and incorporates the full ODA database in its 2016 version (see Lineage). Identification of citizen science records, based on the photos uploaded, is done by a panel of experts in the relevant taxa. The taxonomy is kept up-to-date by the project coordinator. The complete data-set is available to the public. Records are provided at the recorded precision, usually point coordinates. However, historical records were assigned to a 15x15 minute grid (or QDS) based on the locality description when no coordinates were provided. The coverage is good for South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini, moderate to very sparse for the rest of Africa. The information consolidated within the project will build up a comprehensive identification guide, as well as mapping the ranges of each species. The motivation was as proof of concept in the development of the new Virtual Museum software. From this humble beginning it has become one of the most successful citizen science projects within the VM system. It is currently a JRS-funded project. The Odonata Database of Africa (ODA) is an open access database developed by a JRS-funded project (Clausnitzer et al. 2012, Dijkstra 2016). It contains records of the distribution of dragonflies and damselflies across Africa and includes most of the museum specimen records for the region as well as literature records. It is available online as the African Dragonflies and Damselflies Online (ADDO). ADDO is a collaboration between the Department of Conservation Ecology and Entomology (University of Stellenbosch) and the ADU (University of Cape Town). Data sourced from ODA has been incorporated into the OdonataMAP database and it represents the most comprehensive distribution database of African Odonata.
