The GI planning domain was based on two products. The first was the area identified by the CAPE Project (Cape Action for People and the Environment) as the core for a proposed Gourits Mega Reserve. This is shown as the central north-south axis. The second product was the compilation of all the important areas delineated on 1:250,000 topographic map sheets at Gouritz expert workshops during May and July of 2003. These two products were used to derive the general broad region for the GI planning domain. To further refine the boundary, a combination of vegetation types, quaternary catchment, contours and political boundaries. This more refine boundary was then adapted to match cadastral boundaries.
