The layer of South African protected areas was compiled using data from different sources. Those were provincial conservation
agencies, South African National Parks, Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, and other organisations. Recent data on
protected areas for each province was derived separately from these different sources. The data from the nine provinces of South Africa was then combined together to form a layer of protected areas. Names of protected areas used in each province were standardised. Protected areas were further classified into 3 types. Type 1 includes: National Parks, Nature Reserves, Provincial Nature Reserves, Local Authority Nature Reserves, and DWAF Forest Nature Reserves. Type 2 includes: Catchment Areas, Wildlife Management Areas, Private Nature Reserves, National Heritage Sites, SANDF properties, Bird Sanctuaries, Botanical Gardens, State Lands, Mountain Catchment Areas, and DWAF Forest Areas. Type 3 includes: Game Farms, Other Conservation Areas, and Game Reserves.

The provincial datasets were updated by incorporating point data and polygons to get the most recent data and names
used for protected areas in each province. The final coverages for the nine provinces were merged to create the National layer of protected areas. The final layer was then dissolved to eliminate duplicates and slivers. (BotSoc: dd_agul_protected_areas.shp) The layer in your Biodiversity Package has been clipped from the Sa_protected_areas_dd.shp to include only those protected areas within or immediately adjacent to (i.e., intersecting) the municipality.
The legend (dd_agul_protected_areas.avl) was created to display formal protected areas, i.e., those most secure in the long-term and/or legally bound as nature reserves.
