Statement

Whitfield (1992) classifies estuaries into 5 types. Those 5 categories were further classified according to its relevant biogeography regions. This classification has resulted to 16 estuary types.

Primary data was obtained from DEAT. The data was modified by Jane Turpie. Some estuaries have been mapped in SANBI vegetation map but not all estuaries were mapped. Estuaries were classified according to three biogeographic

regions (cool temperate, warm temperate and subtropical) and 5 types (river mouth, temporarily closed, permanently open, estuarine bays and estuarine lakes).
