- Purpose
-
The major objective of this fine-scale vegetation study was to produce a defensible vegetation classification system and vegetation map suitable for analysis for the defined planning domain. The integrated vegetation map is used within the conservation planning processes as biodiversity surrogate for which targets are set.

The vegetation was mapped by Nick Helme Botanical Surveys in the field on SPOT 5 space maps georeferenced to Landsat 7 Pan band and printed by GeoTerraImage. These maps were printed at a variable scale smaller than 1:50 000. The hardcopy maps were digitised from a tablet in ArcView. Some mapping was done by the Nick Helme on-screen with the SPOT 5 image backdrop (pan-merged at 2.5 m resolution). Additional polygons from Barry Low's Dune Ecosystems Layer (mobile duneveld) and the Nieuwoudtville Conservation Farming Project (renosterveld vegetation types) were added where appropriate. Wetland vegetation types were broadly identified by Nick Helme and then refined and added to by the Fresh Water Consulting Group. The edges of the fine-scale map were matched against the SA Vegetation map, but in many cases the boundaries do not align.
