2018 South African Inventory of Inland Aquatic Ecosystems (SAIIAE) geodatabase
The 2018 South African Inventory of Inland Aquatic Ecosystems (SAIIAE) geodatabase is a collection of data layers pertaining to ecosystem types and pressures for both rivers and inland wetlands. These data layers were developed and used for the 2018 National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA 2018).

South African Inventory of Inland Aquatic Ecosystems.
Improving the National Wetland Inventory. Mapping the locality of wetlands is essential so that they may be classified into the different wetland ecosystem types across the country, which in turn can be used along with other data to identify wetlands of conservation significance.

It is crucial that the NWM5 be downloaded and interpreted with the context of the NWM 5 confidence map and the artificial wetlands map as there are strong linkages between these datasets

Compilation of the South African Inventory of Inland Aquatic Ecosystems (SAIIAE) 2018 was undertaken as part of the National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA) 2018, with the primary intention of including those datasets related to ecosystems type and condition.
Four broad categories of spatial data features were collected, including those related to rivers, wetlands, their condition and others.
Please see Van Deventer et al. (2018) for further details. The SAIIAE 2018 geodatabase consists of the following features:
• NBA 2018 Rivers
• National Wetland Map 5 (NWM 5) (Please note: It is crucial that the NWM5 be downloaded and interpreted with the context of the NWM 5 confidence map and the artificial wetlands map as there are strong linkages between these datasets.)
• NWM 5 Confidence map
• NBA 2018 Artificial wetlands
• Aquaculture
• Dam wall heights
• Desiccated and burnt peatlands
• Inland wetlands Level 2 regions
• National Freshwater Ecosystem Priority Areas Sub-Quaternary Catchments (NFEPA SQ4s)
• National Wetland Map (NWM) subversion 5.2 (initial NGI input layers)
• Oxbows (points)
• Ramsar sites (polygons)
• Ramsar sites (points)
• Springs
• Thermal springs
• Wetland probability map 2018
• National Wetland Map 1 (NWM1), National Wetland Map 2 (NWM2), National Wetland Map 3 (NWM3)
• Water treatment works
• Wastewater treatment works (WWTW)
• Wastewater treatment works (WWTW) declared critical on 4 January 2019
