2018 Limpopo Province Map of Critical Biodiversity Areas and Ecological Support Areas1
This is the Map of Critical Biodiversity Areas and Ecological Support Areas (CBA Map) produced by the Limpopo Conservation Plan V2 (LCPv2, 2013), and updated consecutively and individually for the Waterberg (2015), Mopani (2016), Vhembe (2017), Sekhukhune (2018) and Capricorn (2018) district municipalities as part the compilation of bioregional plans for these municipalities. Each bioregional plan produced an updated CBA map for the district.
The bioregional plan serves as the primary biodiversity informant to a range of planning and land-use authorisation processes, although it is important to recognise that the bioregional plan does not replace any planning and decision-making processes and does not grant, limit or remove land-use rights.
EcosolGIS and NuLeaf Planning and Environmental (Pty) Ltd compiled the bioregional plans with support from the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), and various stakeholders within each district. The provincial CBA map developed by the LCPv2 was updated for each district based on these inputs. During the consultation process, real and potential threats, updated information and non-alignment between the LCPv2 and the assessed aspects, as well as, the various instruments and informants were identified. A detailed description of the alignment process is contained in the respective Process and Consultation Reports.
This product merges these five maps into a single CBA map for the province in order to harmonise the serving of spatial information and resolving edge matching between districts.

Not planned. A complete update of the CBA map will be made with the revision of the provincial conservation plan planned for 2021. No maintenance or changes are envisaged before then. Elements of the CBA map such as protected areas and the No Natural Remaining category can be updated by users using other available products.

This map products was created by combining the five bioregional plan CBA maps into a single Limpopo map as follows:
1. Compile input datasets:
a. Waterberg_Terrestrial_CBA_2015_FINAL_u35s.shp
b. Mopani CBA Map v3.shp
c. LCPv2_CBA_Layer_VHEMBE.shp
d. Sekhu_Capri_CBA_Map2018_poly_U35s.shp
2. Re-project inputs to the ALBERS projection.
3. Union inputs into a single layer without gaps.
4. Combine the input CBA fields into a single field (field name = CBA_2018). Resolve overlaps between inputs by setting the most recent CBA map as priority.
5. Clean and dissolve features based on CBA_2018
6. Output = Limpopo_CBA_2018_merged_ALBERS
Notes:
1. This merging process has removed the planning unit boundaries that were used to construct the original LCPv2 CBA map. This was necessary as these had been removed already in some of the inputs, and also because the land cover-based PU boundaries were no longer valid in may areas due to changes in land cover (i.e. natural areas have been converted to not natural areas). Consequently, the link between the CBA map and the underlying biodiversity features informing the CBA map has been lost. It is recommended that the original feature lookup table for the LCPv2 be used.
2. It is recommended that when using this product that the protected areas category be updated using the latest PA layer (e.g. SANBI NBA 2018 or DEA PACA layers); and the No Natural Remaining category be updated with the latest land cover product available.
3. Note that the Kruger National Park polygon is not present in the final CBA map as this was removed in some of the inputs. See above point regarding the recommendation for protected areas when using this product.
