Improving the National wetland inventory
Uncertainties in the distinct differences between wetland ecosystem types across wetland vegetation groups, as used in the NBA 2011, resulted in the consideration of the bioregions from the National Vegetation Map (NVM) of 2018 (Dayaram et al. in review) for the spatial representation of the regional setting at Level 2 of the Classification System for Wetlands and other Aquatic Ecosystems in South Africa.

The NVM 2018 included updates to vegetation types in the Fynbos and Albany Thicker Biomes (Dayaram et al. in review). Aquatic categories in the NVM 2018 were subsumed into adjacent vegetation types and the updated estuaries functional zones were excluded. Several other bioregions were also subsumed into adjacent bioregions, similar to the wetland vegetation types (Nel et al. 2011a; 2011b). These included the 'Alluvial Vegetation', 'Azonal Forests', 'Inland Saline Vegetation' and 'Zonal & Intrazonal Forests'. The outcome resulted in 37 vegetation bioregions for the regional setting at Level 2. The majority of these bioregions match those published in Mucina & Rutherford (2006), except for the Eastern Strandveld (23 polygons extending over 1 375 ha where no wetland polygones have been mapped) and Seashore Vegetation (877 polygons extending over 42 067 ha containing 37 wetland polygons of 787 ha) which are both thinly distributed on the coast.
