This layer represents the integrated layer of the detailed vegetation map of the Saldanha Peninsula, North West Sandveld and Bokkeveld planning domain in the Western Cape, the South African Vegetation map (NSBA 2004), Nieuwoudtville Conservation Farming Project Vegetation Map and extracts from Barry Low’s Dune Ecosystem Layer. Vegetation categories were based on the South African vegetation types of Mucina & Rutherford (2006), but it was necessary to describe a several new, previously unrecognised vegetation types in the Fine-Scale Planning Domains. Certain vegetation boundaries were substantially redrawn from those presented in Mucina & Rutherford (2006) The major objective of this study is to produce a defensible vegetation classification system and vegetation map suitable for analysis at a scale of 1:10 000 for the defined planning domain. BGIS Spatial Datasets The vegetation was mapped by Nick Helme Botanical Surveys in the field on SPOT 5 space maps georeferenced to Landsat 7 Pan band and printed by GEOTERRAIMAGE. These maps were printed at a variable scale smaller than 1:50 000. The hardcopy maps were digitised from a tablet in ArcView. Some mapping was by the vegetation mapper on-screen with the SPOT 5 image backdrop and additional polygons from Barry Low's Dune Ecosystems Layer and the Nieuwoudtville Conservation Farming Project were added where appropriate. Wetland vegetation types were broadly identified by Nick Helme and then refined by and added to the Fresh Water Consulting Group. These wetland vegetation types have been patched into the vegetation layer. The edges were matched against the SA Vegetation map.
