In contrast, the spatial data layer of artificial dams associated with the South African Inventory of Inland Aquatic Ecosystems (SAIIAE) mapped 204 893 dams (Van Deventer et al. 2018). The majority of the dam register’s records (83%) have size categories and dates assigned, distinguishing between large (3%), medium (20%) and small (76%) dams.
