National Land Cover 2009 (Mosaic Land Cover)

Land Cover and Land Use changes often indicate major impacts on biodiversity

especially if those changes show the loss of natural habitat due to urban sprawl,

cultivation, etc. Spatial LC/LU patterns often form a reference for applications

ranging from monitoring, planning, biodiversity, climate change, etc. Different

projects and application have referenced NLC 1994 & NLC 2000, but these products

are rather being outdated since they do not reflect the true reflection of the current

landscape. Due to rather outdated information on land cover, there is high demand

for improved land covert data sets on a national scale.

Statement

Origin of the data:

This product is coming from different data sources, it range from fine scale municipal land cover data, provincial land cover, ARC cultivation filed boundaries and ESKOM Spot 5 building count.

Accuracy:

The accuracy of the product was not tested since there was no reference data to be used or ground control points but ARC cultivation and ESKOM data were having an accuracy of ± 90% accuracy. Since these two data sources were given priority over other data sources, we assume that the final product will have more or less similar accuracy.

Data Confidence

This is not the new version of land cover map but this should be used as good indicator of land use changes over 10 years in South Africa. This product shows major land use in South Africa by using the best available data.

Currency:

None

Conditions of Purchase:

None

This product should not be used as a new version of land cover but rather be used as an indicator of major land use changes in the country. It have seven classes which represents major land uses, and this is not on the finer details as the previous land cover products
