2012 Vegetation Map of South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland
Note: This is version 2 of the 2012 beta dataset. It was recently edited and the update published in March 2016.
This is the second updated version of the 2006 map. Changes made in the 2009 version were retained and additional portions of the 2006 map have been mapped at a finer scale. The updates come from fine scale mapping done by contributing partners, local and provincial authorities.
In using the 2012 beta and 2009 versions of the map, it is important to be aware of the following considerations.
• The descriptions and attributes of vegetation types have not been systematically updated to reflect the new spatial extent of vegetation described, or the threat status and protection level.
•Brief descriptions of new vegetation units are included in the folder. The 2011 National Biodiversity Assessment has been done with the 2006 version of the map for these reasons listed above.
•The Gazetted threatened ecosystem list is based on vegm2006 and does not reflect the fine scale mapping captured in the 2009 and 2012 beta versions.
•Updates are sometimes within an area (domain) which is not biogeographically significant. Therefore polygons of vegetation types crossing the domain line may be mapped at uneven scales

This version i.e. NVM2012_ddwgs84beta2 replaces NVM2012_ddwgs84beta. In this version an error in the names of two vegetation types (AZa8 should have been AZa5 and AZd5 should have been AZe3) erroneously included in NVM2012_ddwgs84beta were corrected and were reclassified appropriately.
Shapes representing riverine units were generally aligned to follow 1:50 000 2006 rivers from Chief Directorate: Surveys and Mapping. Many other shapes including some of the koppies were generated prior to the availability of these 1:50 000 data and are reasonably accurately located.
