Renosterveld Priority Clusters (priority_clusters_renosterveld_dd)
CAPE Lowlands Renosterveld – Priority Clusters. This data layer shows ecosytem status for vegetation types occurring in the Cape Lowlands Renosterveld planning domain (see separate infosheet for planning domain). Ecosystem status indicates whether a particular vegetation type is ‘critically endangered’, ‘endangered’, ‘vulnerable’ or ‘least threatened’. These categories are based on biodiversity targets (calculated for the National Spatial Biodiversity Assessment, NSBA, 2004) and on the extent (% area) of natural vegetation remaining for that particular vegetation type.

The layer is one of several aimed at guiding conservation action. The renosterveld priority clusters layer indicates which lowland renosterveld areas should be the focus of implementation initiatives, aimed at promoting sustainable land use practices in these areas and at securing the protection of their biodiversity by means of long-term conservation agreements.

The renosterveld priority clusters layer was based on the outputs of the Cape Lowlands Renosterveld Project’s ‘Biodiversity Summary Layer’, which integrates all biodiversity information collected for the renosterveld region. It was an interim layer used during the project analysis (see section 12 in the project report, reference below, for further information).
To identify priority clusters the following information was considered:
1. Based on the biodiversity summary layer, renosterveld remnants of particular significance (i.t.o species harboured, ecological
processes occurring, area of remaining renosterveld) were selected.
2. Remnants occurring within 500m or less of other renosterveld habitat were clustered together and designated as priority clusters and
buffered by 500m. The clusters therefore contain connected renosterveld habitat as well as the cultivated land surrounding them (up to
a distance of 500m).
For more information see detailed explanations in sections 12 and 13 of the reference below.
