Mpumalanga Highveld Wetlands
This layer codes Mpumalanga Highveld wetlands. The delineations were based on tracking wetlands on Spot 5 imagery within the Mpumalanga Highveld boundary supported by google earth, 1:50 000 contour lines, 1:50 000 river lines, exigent data, NFEPA wetlands.
This focusses on updating previously mapped wetlands in three major steps which are desktop digitizing, field groundtruthing and mapped data reviewing.

To ground-truth and refine the current data layers of the extent, distribution, condition and type of freshwater ecosystems in the Mpumalanga Highveld coal belt, in order to support informed and consistent decision-making by regulators in relation to the water-biodiversity-energy nexus. To incorporate these revised data layers into the atlas of high-risk freshwater ecosystems and guidelines for wetland offsets, currently being developed by SANBI, in order to improve the scientific robustness of these tools. To support the uptake, and development of the necessary capacity to apply the data, atlas and guidelines by regulators and the coal mining industry in their planning and decision-making processes.

Highveld grasslands boundary was chosen as the study area for the project supported by the catchment quinaries. A spot 5 imagery used as the base imagery for digitizing reference. At a desktop digitizing stage HGM unit was identified and confirmed from field. More data was collected from field and reviewed back in the office and incorporated in the layer attribute table. Reviewing was aligned also with polygon boundary adjustment where necessary in order to produce good product. The data is captured in vector format from desktop, groundtruthed and reviewed. At each of these stages, data on wetland boundaries, type and condition was collected. Four Water Management Areas within the Mpumalanga Highveld were targeted by the project. Training and capacity building on wetland delineation was conducted during the course of the project. The primary result was an updated spatial dataset for the wetlands of the
Mpumalanga Highveld. . Additional analysis was conducted on this dataset to determine changes to ecosystem threat status, protection level and Freshwater Ecosystem Priority Areas (FEPAs) arising from refinement of the wetland data.
