2026 Stewardship Sites - (Signed and Designated)
CapeNature Stewardship Sites - Sites signed up or declared, including categories, such as Contract Nature Reserves, Biodiversity Agreements, Biodiversity Agreement Servitudes, Reactive sites, Protected Environments & Biodiversity Partnership Agreements.
The definitions for the statuses are as follows;
Declared - refers to all Nature Reserves (including Contract Nature Reserves) or Protected Environments declared by the Minister or MEC, and subsequently Gazetted (Notice Number provided in Master Stewardship Register). Biodiversity Agreements and Biodiversity Partnership Agreements do not fall under the NEM: Protected Areas Act and therefore do not get declared.
PAMA signed - means a Protected Area Management Agreement has been signed for the Nature Reserve or Protected Environment but it has not been declared yet.
BA/BPA signed - means a Biodiversity Agreement or Biodiversity Partnership Agreement has been signed for the site.
Registered – applicable to conservation agreement - servitudes, which doesn’t go through the normal process for signing and designation.

The original data was extracted from the various regions stewardship databases.
Since the database is not in working order, updated shapefiles are sent annually to the Programme Manager for Stewardship Sites from the various regions and then onto Conservation Innovation. These updates are added to the latest known update.
The updates for 2014 were done on the base layers as last updated by Genevieve Pence in August 2013. These layers were; (i) Master Stewardship Register_Q4 Jan 2013.xlsx, (ii) StewardshipAll_pluspending_Capenature_16aug2013_utm.xlsx, and (iii) StewardshipAll_pluspending_CapeNature_16Aug2013_utm.shp.
The updates to the Stewardship Sites layer were received from Kerry Purnell on the 3rd of October 2014. The updated spreadsheet was received on the 10th of October 2014.
Various updates were then done between 2015 and 2026 based on the latest Master Stewardship Register, PAMAs and gazettes of declared sites received. Also, various corrections of boundaries and names as needed.
Updates: 10/10/2025 – 22/06/2026
All edits were received with various e-mail communications. Using these e-mails, I (i) added seven (7) new sites based on the property reference and cadastre layer or shapefiles received, (ii) changed the statuses of 37 properties including intentions to declare (of these 37 sites, 5 had changes to its area), (iii) using diagrams, cadastre and/or proclamations, fixed the boundaries of one (1) sites, and (iv) removed no (0) sites.
Changed stewardship site type Voluntary Conservation Areas to Biodiversity Partnership Agreement.
It was also decided that OECMs such as “Conservation Servitudes” will no longer be recorded in this layer, but only in the Conservation Estate layer. Once the OECM process has been formalised, all conservation areas falling within these criteria will be moved.
