Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife

Methodology:

This is a grid version of the original KZN 2008 Land Cover Version 1 as produced by GeoTerraImage - see 2008 KZN Province Land-Cover Mapping: Data Users Report and Metadata (version 1.0). The province-wide KZN Land-Cover dataset was generated from single date SPOT5 imagery that was acquired as part of the SA Government / CSIR / SPOT IMAGE agreement to supply annual, country wide coverage of SPOT5 imagery. All the imagery was acquired during 2008, primarily during the late summer / autumn period, which offered a level of seasonal standardization across a significant portion of the image data. Appendix 2 illustrates schematically the acquisition dates (by month) for all the 2008 SPOT5 images used to compile the 2008 KZN land-cover dataset. All SPOT5 images were acquired as precision level ortho-corrected images, and were thus used “as-is” without any further geo-correction prior to subsequent classification and mapping procedures, apart from ensuring that all data was in UTM zone 36 (south) / WGS84 map projection.

In order to ensure direct compatibility with the previous SPOT2 / 4 based 2005 KZN land-cover data format, all 2008 SPOT5 multispectral images were spatially re-sampled to a 20m pixel format (using cubic convolution algorithms) from the source 10m format. All land-cover

mapping and digital classification procedures were performed on the resampled 20m pixel format imagery. This coverage was clipped to reflect the KZN Provincial boundary as of 2008. This still incorporates the Matatiele region, though this is currently under dispute as to whether this is in fact part of the Eastern Cape.

Date: December 2010 This coverage is a grid conversion of the original KZN 2008 Land Cover Version 1 (kzn-2008- landcover-final-filtered-final3-tm-lo31.img). The 2008 KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Land-Cover dataset represents an update of the previously released 2005 KZN Provincial Land-Cover dataset. The 2008 KZN land-cover dataset (version 3) has been derived from 2008 SPOT5 multispectral

imagery, and contains the same information classes as the previous 2005 land-cover dataset, although several new sub-classes have been included in the 2008 legend structure. In addition, a new modified version of the previous 2005 land-cover has also been released along with the updated 2008 dataset. This new release of the 2005 KZN landcover dataset has been created using time-stable components of the 2008 land-cover dataset to correct mapping errors identified within the original 2005 dataset during compilation of the 2008 dataset.
