Statement

The 2003 NM MOSS vegetation map was used in this study for the delineation of biodiversity pattern in Nelson Mandela Bay. During the course of the 2003 study, 12 broad habitat units , which were divided into 58 vegetation types, were mapped in the field onto 1:10 000 orthophotographs and digitized into a GIS. The vegetation froups and types were refined during and after field mapping. However the vegetation type classified as Bethelsdorp Mesic Succulent Thicket by the NM MOSS Study of 2003 was renamed to Bethelsdorp Bontveld in order to ensure complete correlation with the vegetation type names used in the STEP report and this assessment. Each vegetation type was then classified according to ecosystem status. The classification of ecosystem status for each vegetation type was based on the methodology employed in the National Spatial Biodiversity Assessment, in order to graphically illustrate the extent to which options still remain for the conservation of the different vegetation types in Nelson Mandela (NSBA 2004), which is particularly relevant for EIAs and other applications for changes in land use.
