2018 Artificial Wetlands

Artificial wetlands of the South African Inventory of Inland Aquatic Ecosystems (SAIIAE). This data set is part of the Inventory released with the launch of the NBA 2018.

National Wetland Map 5 includes inland wetlands and estuaries, but are associated with river line data and many other data sets within the South African Inventory of Inland Aquatic Ecosystems (SAIIAE). Please ensure you obtain the full geodatabase and relevant reports to understand the appropriate use of the data. Appropriate use and a disclaimer is provided under the relevant reports below.

Purpose

Improving the national wetland inventory.

Mapping the locality of wetlands is essential so that they may be classified into the different wetland ecosystem types across the country, which in turn can be used along with other data to identify wetlands of conservation significance.

Statement

As part of the development of the national wetland map a dataset of artificial water bodies was built using the DRDLR:NGI hydrological features exported from NWM5.2. All non-natural feature types were included in this feature class and were checked for consistency and then integrated by Dr Andrew Skowno (SANBI) with the national 1:50 000 dams map. Dr Heidi van Deventer subsequently added and cleaned the dataset. Please see Van Deventer et al. (2018) for more information.
